In the wake of the #JesseSingal controversy, the #Bluesky moderation team have clarified their perspective.
It's... not great. And gives me further reason to stick to the #Fediverse .
In the past month alone, over 12M people joined Bluesky,…
Bluesky Social@juergen_hubert Sorry, what's going on?
@forteller Jesse Singal is a well-known transphobic journalist who has apparently joined to Bluesky to stir up shit.
If he his banned, he gets to whine "Help, help, I am being suppressed!" which is good for ratings with his transphobic audience.
If he is not banned, more transphobes will be encouraged to go to Bluesky and eventually turn it into a transphobe-fest like X is.
The moderation team of Bluesky decided not to ban Singal, and thus have gone for the second option.
@juergen_hubert @forteller To be fair, they haven't actually made any action either way yet: this message was simply put out in the wake op the community asking them to say anything. It's still an on-going dispute and even has a huge petition going on alongside it.
@juergen_hubert I see. Thank you!
@juergen_hubert basically it is twitters but not yet Xs
@juergen_hubert And so we learn that "composable moderation"/choice of "moderation providers" doesn't actually do anything or solve anything
@tomw @juergen_hubert As I understand it, the Blacksky experience is that composable moderation isn't enough by itself, but isn't it one of the tools Blacksky have used? Not that I object to people wanting to stick with the Fediverse (whose safety issues are not zero, but are different in nature).
@juergen_hubert I mean, this place ain't perfect, but I'm on a server with good moderation and I haven't had to see any of social media's bad actors in the TTRPG sphere or from elsewhere since November 2022. Heck, I don't even really have to think about them unless something they did on another platform gets people talking (like the current Jesse Singal business on BS).
