The Reno City Council voted unanimously on Wednesday to pass an ordinance prohibiting the retail sale of dogs, cats and rabbits in pet stores.
The ordinance does not limit pet stores from providing space to an animal rescue to offer adoptions, but they must be non-profit.
The prohibition goes into effect and impacts all existing and future pet stores.
Officials with the City of Reno said legitimate breeders are exempt and have different accreditations in the industry.
They said stores can sell items, treats, toys and other animals like fish.
